240 mm core with dry willow facade

Barriers with a facade of dry, woven willow always have a bearing hardwood structure, e.g. plantation acacia and steel. The willow rods form the aesthetic part of the barrier and have no structural function. The core is a self-supporting 240 mm rock wool core built with 120 mm wool batting in a bond pattern. The willow rods are thick, Grade 1, 2-3-year-old willow, which will stay on the barrier all its life.  With time, the bark will age naturally and decay in beautiful concert with the ivy to cover the structure. Debarked willow rods can be fitted without plants. The aging of the willow rods – natural wear and tear – leaves its mark beautifully on the rods which age naturally.

This is in sharp contrast to cut wood and planks in which cracks and aging give the appearance of decay and lack of maintenance. The beauty of this natural aging process and the fact that the willow rods need no maintenance are the great advantages of the woven facade solution. The frame posts are typically placed in the ground in a concrete foundation although further foundations may be required on banks and inclines. In mountainous areas, on bridges, etc. post brackets are used.
