Innovation

Innovation constitutes an enduring part of our daily work at PileByg. One of our latest results ended up as global news – namely industrial debarking of large-size willow rods. Debarked willow has a new bare and clean look – and it has a very long life expectancy.

Improved durability of debarked willow
While the Danish market is still dominated by willow weave ‘with bark’, the debarked willow has always been most popular from a global and historical perspective. This is especially due to the longer life expectancy of the debarked willow. Now new Danish technology makes possible the debarking of large willow rods and thereby the production of willow fencing with a significantly extended life.

Kunsthåndvaerker Birgit Oestergård Jensen

PileByg is behind this development. The craftswoman and willow weaver, Birgit Østergaard Jensen explains: ”Our new debarked willow fence appears in a completely different and finely processed design. This is a great gift to keen gardeners. The shiny, light willow rods add a new level of finish and aesthetic charm to the world of willow fencing – and provide a stylistically consistent look for house and garden. We call ourselves willow professionals and I believe that this fence shows you why. This technology has been expensive to develop, but it gives us the best way to respect long-standing knowledge about willow. We would very much like to contribute to giving the debarked willow a renaissance – also in a new form”.

The oldest weave finds were actually debarked willow which go back to the Roman Iron Age. The first, known Danish basket was also made of debarked willow and dates back to 350 AD. Historical knowledge forms the basis for calculating a life expectancy of up to three times longer for the debarked willow.

PileByg sells both WEST COAST FENCES and THE GREEN ELEMENT® in debarked willow.
