Willow does a lot – and is ideal for giving landscape spaces free form. We work with both living and dry willow – while still taking into consideration the capabilities of the willow as well as its limitations. Examples of PileByg projects:

Willow basket for Roundabout – for the Danish National Road Directorate
On the basis of an idea and design by Danish National Road Directorate Aesthetic Consultant Ulla Egebjerg, PileByg has provided a giant woven structure with wide bands of willow weave. The form follows the middle of the roundabout all the way round and finishes in an overlap. The fence has been woven among oversize acacia posts. The willow is very thick, was dried over six months and then woven between the posts on site. Ivy has been planted at the foot of the willow weave. When the willow ages, the ivy will cover and prolong the life expectancy of the willow. This will also provide an elegant contrast between the weather-beaten willow weave and the ivy.

Gramstadbåten – commissioned by the Municipality of Sandenes, Norway
Gramstadbåten was designed by Birgit Østergaard-Jensen from PileByg in partnership with the potter and craftsman Torunn Måseidvåg. A steel skeleton carries dense willow planted in a meticulous pattern emphasising the lines of a Viking ship. This builds on the idea that the ship travels to the hereafter – children have hung ceramics in the bottom of the upturned boat illustrating the things they would choose to take with them into the afterlife. Gramstadbåten changes colour and expression with the changing seasons.

Fences in willow weave – holiday homes by the sea, Sønder Frankel, Rømø
The technique of boiling and debarking very large willow rods means that long life expectancy can now be achieved for fences woven with this particular fencing technique. This means in a horizontal weave. The fence will only last for a short time if it is woven in willow with bark. With this fence technique new options become available to follow the lines of the landscape and incorporate shelter and screening as Land Art. In partnership with the architects ASM Assentoft, PileByg has designed screen fencing for a range of new, coastal holiday homes on Rømø.
